Jack Sabo

I met Charlie in 1962 when my family moved from Long Branch ALL the way over to West Long Branch. I signed up for little league and at one of the West Long Branch Chiefs practices I looked over to see this little chubby fellow catching for the West Long Branch Vols and I said to myself "I am gonna shine in this league".Haaaa.. Little did I know that stubby catcher and second baseman was going to be a lifelong friend of mine for the next 49 years. We played ball either against or with eachother in Little League, Babe Ruth, Ed Carleton, Shore Regional High School under Jake "the stick is out" Jefferies and into the Semi-Pro Leagues from Trenton to Atlantic City on the Long Branch Pirates & other teams to many to mention. And later in life Charlie would travel down to Florida and Georgia to join me to see Spring Training games or to watch the Atlanta Falcons or the Atlanta Braves. One special time he came down for the specific purpose of taking my two year old son to a spring training game. I can't even tell you how many times we went to Yankee Stadium on bus trips. Charlie, you were the ultimate sports fan and I'll always remember those Sunday afternoon phone calls you made to me when I needed to hear a friendly voice. For all of this, I will miss you Charlie...a dear friend who never knew just how much you mattered and how you were loved.
