Obituary for William J. "Bill" Gately

William J. Gately, Sr. “Bill”, 87, of Oceanport, died at home with his family on Monday, July 6, 2015. He was born in Newark on May 6, 1928. William is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Louise Gruskos Gately; his son, William Gately Jr and daughter-in-law Linda Gately; son-in-law Bernia Denegar; grandchildren, Louis Denegar and Emily Gately and many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Lorraine Chesek and three siblings. William was pre-deceased by his daughter Linda Denegar, his parents, Lawrence and Mildred (Mary) Gately and four siblings.
William played football at the East Side High school in Newark before he was drafted into the Army in February 1951 and remained on active duty until February 1953 when he was transferred to the Army Reserves. He continued to play football in the service and received an honorable discharge January 3, 1957. William went on to play semi-pro football with the Newark East Siders and joined the Newark Police Department on April 15, 1955 where he served as a patrolman, detective and emergency service officer. He retired in April 1980.
William enjoyed collecting and watching movies, gardening, woodworking, drawing, music and boating. William loved spending time with his family. He was a tough Irishman with a warm heart. William will be missed by all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 6-9 pm Friday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 882 Broadway, West Long Branch. Funeral service 10 am Saturday at the funeral home followed by burial at Monmouth Memorial Park in Tinton Falls. For condolences, please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com.
