Virginia Pistolese Dettore, 90, of West Long Branch, died Monday, August 13, 2012, at Barnabas Health Hospice, Long Branch.
She was born in Newark and lived in West Long Branch since 1955. She worked for Prudential Insurance Company in Newark for many years. Virginia attended Rutgers College in Newark at night while working. She played basketball as a member of the Prudential Athletic Association. She continued her education at Monmouth College in West Long Branch and graduated magna cum laude with a BS degree in elementary education in 1962. She was a member of the Honor Society LAMBDA SIGMA TAU. Mrs. Dettore taught in the Long Branch School System for 32 years before retiring in 1993. She served as secretary of the Long Branch Education Association for two terms. She was an active member of the West Long Branch Leisure Club and served as vice-president for two terms. She was a member of the Old First United Methodist Church in West Long Branch. She enjoyed doing volunteer work for the church. She was a wonderful mom and loved being with her family and friends. She was caring and charitable and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Virginia was predeceased by her parents, Anna and Anthony Pistolese and her daughter, Barbara Ann Dettore.
Surviving are her daughter, Carol Lynn Matlack and her husband John; sister, Annette Megaro; brother, Clifford Pistolese; her husband, Rocco Dettore; her nephews, Frank and Robert Anthony Megaro and Brian and Mark Pistolese.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from noon to 2 pm with a funeral service to be held at 1:30 pm Thursday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Food Bank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties, 3300 Route 66, Neptune, NJ 07753. Please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com for condolences
