Nicie Hammond, 98 of Keyport, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 18 at home.
She was born in Grenada, Mississippi on September 16, 1912. She moved to New York where she worked for the Leather Goods, Handbags and Novelty Workers Union in New York for many years before retiring in 1971. She met and married Benjamin Hammond on August 8, 1922. They made their home in Keyport before his passing 25 year ago. She also worked for the Borough of Keyport as a crossing guard for 33 years before retiring at the age of 93 in 2006 and was honored with “Nicie Hammond Day” on September 5, 2006. She was a faithful member of the Second Baptist Church, Keyport and served on the usher board and was a member of the church choir.
Surviving are 2 nieces, Sue and Jeannette Jennings of Flushing, NY, nephew, Robert Jennings of Louisville, KY and other friends and neighbors.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 10 am until her funeral service at 11 am Tuesday at the Second Baptist Church, Keyport. Burial will follow at Shorelands Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
