Monsignor Alfred D. Smith, 88, former Pastor of St. Rose Roman Catholic Church, Belmar, died Monday, September 12, 2011 at St. Lawrence Rehab Center, Lawrenceville.



Born in New Haven, CT, he studied for the priesthood at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT, St. Bernard Seminary in Rochester, NY and Our Lady of the Angels Seminary in Niagara, NY. He was ordained on May 30, 1953 in St. Mary's Cathedral in Trenton by the late Bishop George W. Ahr. His first assignment was at St. Joseph's Church in Trenton. In 1953, he was named assistant pastor at Our Lady of Peace Church in Fords, in 1960 he was assigned to St. Joseph's Church, Keyport, in 1966 he was named Administrator of St. Mary's Cathedral and later appointed as Rector in 1970. In 1975, he was appointed as the seventh Pastor of St. Rose Church, Belmar and elevated to Monsignor in March 10, 1984. In 1988, he was appointed as Episcopal Vicar of Monmouth County. He was the Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in March 1995.



Monsignor retired to Lawrenceville in July 27, 2000.



Surviving are 2 brothers, Edward an dhis wife Patricia Smith and Frank Smith and several nieces and nephews.







Visiting will be from 3:30 pm until 7 pm with the Mass of Jesus Christ the High Priest at 5 pm Sunday at St. Rose Church, Belmar with Msgr. Edward J. Arnister, Pastor celebrating. Visiting will be from 9:30 until his Funeral Mass at 11 am Monday with the Most Rev. David M. O'Connell, Bishop of Trenton, celebrating. Entombment will follow at St. Catharine's Mausoleum, Wall Township.
