Mary Vozos Papageorge died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, October 30, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was 78 years old.
Born in Vila Peri, Mozambique, Africa on June 18, 1936 and later moved to Rhodesia. Mary moved with her family to the island of Karpathos, Greece in 1948. She lived there until marrying George Papageorge in 1959 and moving to America as newlyweds.
Very quickly Mary and George started their family and within four years had three children, Anne, Marissa and Aris. They lived in Eatontown and were partners in the well-known Monmouth Queen Diner. In 1967 the family moved to Oakhurst. After Mary’s children had careers and families she moved to Interlaken to live with her daughter Anne. Mary spent more than three wonderful years at Brandywine Assisted Living in Shrewsbury where she was well cared for and had many friends.
Mary was passionate about many things; however what was most important to her was her Greek Orthodox faith and heritage, her loving family and the beautiful island of Karpathos, Greece. Mary was a faithful supporter and active member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Asbury Park/ Ocean Township for more than 55 years and served on the parish council. One of her joys was seeing the newly built St. George Church open its doors at its new location in April 2012. She was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and served as president and other board positions. Recently Mary was honored as Mother of the Year. Mary also served on the Metropolis of NJ Philoptochos Board and was a former member of the Daughters of Penelope.
Mary was predeceased by her husband George in 1993, and her parents, Emmanuel and Annika Vozos. She is survived by her children Anne Papageorge, Marissa Costidis and her husband George, Aris Papageorge and his wife Evelyn and her seven loving grandchildren Margo, Costa, George and Spiro Costidis and George, Anne and Antonia Papageorge. She is also survived by her brother, Frixos Vozos and his wife Fannie, sister, Kalliroi Destes and her husband Stamati, sister-in-law Sophia Diakoyianis and nieces and nephews, Mairoula, Renoula, Manolis, Georgia and Dimitris.

Mary’s children would like to acknowledge her cousin, Dr. Frank Vozos and the dedicated and exemplary doctors, nurses and staff of Monmouth Medical Center and also the staff of Brandywine Assisted Living at the Sycamore.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 3-7 pm Sunday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road in Oakhurst. Funeral service will be held at 10 am Monday at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 West Park Avenue in Ocean. Burial will follow at St. George Greek Orthodox Church Cemetery in Neptune.
