Obituary for John H. Sintic

John Henry Sintic, 77, died on Monday, February 23, 2015 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey after his valiant fight with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) aka ”Lou Gehrig’s” disease. His strong will to live and the love of family, friends, and many supporters carried him through 3 years of battling the disease. Yet, even throughout his own struggle with ALS, he was always concerned with everyone else’s well-being.
John was born on November 20, 1937 in Somers Point, New Jersey to Vitus “Jerry” and Barbara Sintic. The oldest to his 2 other brothers, Jerry and Richard and his sister – Joyce – still live with their spouses and companions – Paula, Jeanine, and Cliff respectively – in different areas of John’s home state of New Jersey.
Known for his ease in frequent conversation with even total strangers, John possessed a contagious smile and an entertaining sense of humor. Throughout his life he maintained a friendly demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. His signature gift of helping and serving others, shown through his constantly giving, laughter, and joking around, will never be forgotten.
After graduating from Long Branch High School in 1956, John enlisted in the United States Navy from 1956 -1959. Shortly after leaving the Navy, John met his sweetheart, Trudy Haskins and the couple was married on May 26, 1960 at Saint Michael’s Church in Long Branch.
Married for 55 years, John and Trudy raised their 4 sons, John Jr., Drake, Todd, and Jimmy for many years in Oakhurst. Possessing a true servant’s heart, John served both as a civil and community servant. He started his career at the Naval Air Test Facility in Lakehurst from 1960- 1966 and, from there, migrated to his final career location at Fort Monmouth where he proudly served as a civil servant for over 34 years in support of the United States Army in the following positions:
• US Army Signal School, Fort Monmouth, NJ 1966 -1971
• US Army Product Manager, Fort Monmouth, NJ 1971-1974
• CECOM Fort Monmouth, NJ 1974-1976
• Joint Chiefs of Staff, Fort Monmouth, NJ 1976 -1983
• Director, Software Engineering Center, Fort Monmouth, NJ 1983-1994
• Defense Contractor, Fort Monmouth, NJ 1994-2012
During his 34 years, John earned various awards for his civil service duties:
• 1994 Recipient of the Department of the Army’s Exceptional Civilian Service Medal (Highest Medal Awarded to Government Civilian)
• 1992 Recipient of the Department of the Army Achievement Medal (Second Highest Medal Awarded to Government Civilian)
• 1990 Army Material Command (28,000 people worldwide) Executive of the Year
Despite John’s distinguished career, he had a passion and love for also serving his community. John helped start the Ocean Township Recreation Soccer Program from 1968 – 1975 which inspired him to start the townships very first Ocean Township Travel Soccer Club in 1975 in which he served as the club’s President from 1975-1984. Today, both programs provide the opportunity for boys and girls to enjoy a positive and enjoyable experience for our kids while allowing them to learn sportsmanship, increase physical fitness, and develop their soccer skills. With over 300 participants, dozens of coaches, and dedicated volunteers, Ocean Township Soccer Club is one of the most respected soccer programs in New Jersey. John also served as the President and member of the Ocean Township Board Of Education from 1984 – 1992 where he was a steadfast advocate for the children of the Ocean Township School District while helping to build the districts first dedicated wrestling room and high school soccer field on the east side of the school’s campus.
Upon retirement from civil service duty, John and his beloved wife Trudy, spent years as volunteers at Saint Vincent DePaul Society as case workers by offering person-to-person service to individuals who are in need and are less fortunate. With a real zest for life, John loved to dance, spend time with his 9 grandchildren, chat with friends and family, and play Golf. If Trudy was his first love, golf was definitely a close second. John could always be found on a golf course, putting green, or driving range!
His surviving family members are numerous, but mainly include: his wife of 55 years, Trudy Sintic; father of 4 children and spouses: John and Jennifer Sintic, Drake and Donna Sintic, Todd and Doris Sintic, and Jim and Danielle Sintic and 9 grandchildren, Jaime, Hadley, McKenzie, Jack, GG, Alexander, Analise, Zachary and Isabella Sintic.
