Obituary for James A. "Jim" Romano

James A. (Jim) Romano, 98, of Elberon, died Friday, October 10, 2014 at home.

He was born in Jersey City and lived there before moving to Elberon in 1981. A graduate of William L. Dickinson High School, he served as a staff sergeant in the US Army during WWII assigned to the China-Burma-India Theater. He returned from the war to earn his degree in Accounting and Business from Rutgers University.

He worked as a cost accountant at American Can Company in Jersey City for 44 years before retiring. He was a communicant of St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church in West Long Branch, a member of the VFW and a former president of the Block Association in Jersey City. Jim was a devoted husband and father and he loved dancing and going to the theater. He was also an avid sports fan, enjoyed food and being with his family. He was a semi pro baseball umpire and a basketball referee.

He was predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Vincenza (Vita) Romano and five of his brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Carmen Beauchamp Romano; son, Colonel James A. Romano, Jr. (US Army retired) and his wife Candy Grimes Romano of Middletown, MD; his daughter, Veronica Romano of Elberon; his beloved brother, Pasquale Romano; sister, Ann Rapka; three grandchildren -- Candace and her husband Todd Hickman, Alicia and her husband Frank Kalthof, James A. Romano III, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2-4 & 7-9 PM Wednesday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 AM Thursday at St. Jerome’s Church in West Long Branch. Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery in Oceanport. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 400 Morris Avenue, Denville, NJ 07834. Please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com for condolences.
