James J. Battle, 80 of Oakhurst, Ocean Township, died Friday, October 29, 2010 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.

He was born and raised in Bronx, NY and lived inYonkers before moving to Oakhurst in 1979.

Mr. Battle retired in 1977 after 20 years as a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department. He was also a New York City elementary school substitute teacher. He received a BS degree and MS degree in Education from Fordham University in Bronx. He was an Army veteran serving during the Korean War and a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Deal.

He was predeceased by his parents, James and Margaret Murphy Battle.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Joan Luethy Battle; sisters, Eileen Hammond and Catherine Kelso and her husband Hugh; nieces and nephews, Margaret Mary Nagy, Kathleen Garcia, William Hammond, John Kelso and Regina Nally and several grand nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2-4 & 7-9 pm Wednesday at Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. Funeral 10 am Thursday from the funeral home followed by an 11 am Funeral Mass at St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, West Long Branch. Burial will be at Brig. Gen. WC Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
