Obituary for Cyril J. Galvin Jr.

Cyril J. Galvin, Jr., age 84 of Belmar, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Sunnyside Manor in Wall Township, NJ.
Cy was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ and spent much of his youth in Belmar. He graduated from St. Peters Prep, Jersey City, and earned the degree of Bachelor of Science in Geology (1957) from St. Louis University. He earned both the degree of Master of Science in Geology and Geophysics (1959) and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (1963) from MIT. At MIT he realized that Coastal Engineering was his area of interest and pursued it for the remainder of his life. In 1965 he went to work for the U. S. Army Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC) at Fort Belvoir, VA, living in the Washington suburb of Springfield, VA. He was a member of many professional engineering societies and spent much time in research at the Library of Congress and the Johns Hopkins University library in Baltimore. He was honored for his work, receiving the Huber Research Prize and the Norman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers. He rose to the position of Chief of the Coastal Processes Branch at CERC. In 1978 he left CERC and opened his own business as Cyril J. Galvin, Coastal Engineer. He staffed an office and continued his research, publishing in many professional journals and magazines. He obtained his Professional Engineer license in several states. His work took him to many countries around the world to provide research and advice on coastal engineering problems.
Cy was the eldest of ten children born to Vera and Cyril Galvin. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Mary Jane, brothers John and Dennis and brother-in-law Jack Shannon. He is survived by Barbara Shannon, Elizabeth Bender (Aaron), Alice Kenny (Patrick), Patricia Johnson (Douglas), Veronica Lindemon (James), and Thomas Galvin (Ann). He has many nieces and nephews. He was especially proud to have his nephew and great nephew named after him and his father.
Cy was close to his brothers and sisters, attending all family events and holiday celebrations. He took a keen interest in the education of his siblings, nieces and nephews. He was the unofficial photographer at all family events such as holidays, christenings and weddings. He is especially remembered for insisting upon taking the annual family Thanksgiving photos next to the red barn at the Lindemon Farm.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Monday, November 4, 2019 at Precious Blood Church in Monmouth Beach, NJ. Preceding the Mass will be a viewing from 9:30 am-10:30 am. Burial will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ. In place of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer Foundation to find a cure for this awful disease.
We wish to thank everyone who helped Cy deal with his progressive affliction over more than six years while living in Belmar Senior Housing and at Sunnyside Manor in Wall Township. Thank you to the people and businesses of Belmar for their true concern and helpfulness. They were Cy’s life line and we are forever grateful, especially to the staff at the Acropolis Restaurant, the Anchor, the Hooked Cafe, Sweet Tease, Joe’s Bagel, the Kearny Bank, the Surf Suds laundromat, the Belmar Police Department and the Belmar Library, plus Senior Housing residents and others of whom we may not be aware. Also, thank you to the Sunnyside Manor and Hospice nurses, aides and everyone who cared for Cy, for their concern, patience and understanding.
