Obituary for Bill Kerwin

William P. Kerwin of Asbury Park, passed away suddenly on Friday, July 10 at his home. Bill was a former educator having touched the many lives of students in: Jefferson Parish in New Orleans, Central Regional and Wall Township High Schools in NJ. In a family known for basketball, Bill took another direction and became a standout runner for Long Branch High School and later for Tulane University. The influence of Coach Kerwin on his student athletes extended beyond the arena of cross country, track or basketball. Bill can be best remembered for the example he set, on and off the field, and his emphasis on doing your personal best.
He was a frequent attendee of all local basketball games to determine the yearly student athlete worthy of the coveted Margaret and James Kerwin Award. The Kerwin Award, named for his parents, has been a significant respected fixture in the Shore Area since 1974.
Bill, a lifelong Democrat, was a staff member for Congressman James J. Howard in his regional office. He was responsible for constituent relations.
His memory will be cherished by his five siblings: Peggy (Hans) Fleischer, Jim (Gayle) Kerwin, Tom Kerwin, Marie (Gene) Kretowitz, and John Kerwin. In addition, his many nieces and nephews: Kevin (Kate), Kyle (Rebekka), Megan (Jeff), Christie, Bre, Kerri, Collette (Seth), Kari (Nick), Gina (Ryan) and 9 grand nieces and nephews will remember and celebrate all of the great times when they were “spoiled by Uncle Billy”. His unwavering faith, a parishioner of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in West End, Long Branch since 1950, unswerving loyalty and spectacular Irish sense of humor will be missed by his family and many friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 4-8 pm Friday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst. Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 am Saturday at St. Michaels’s Church in West End, Long Branch.
