Obituary for Virginia A. Marmora

Virginia Anne Marmora (nee Crandall) passed away on October 7, 2022 after a courageous, painful battle with pancreatic cancer. She died at home peacefully, surrounded by the loving and grateful family she nurtured and sacrificed so much for. Virginia, known as “Ginny,” was born on November 3, 1934 to Frederick and Betty Crandall, who settled their family in Asbury Park shortly thereafter. She attended St. Rose Grammar School and High School (Class of ’52), where she met and fell in love with a boy from Neptune, Joseph Marmora, who would become her lifetime companion and soul mate. Ginny then earned her RN degree at St. Vincent Nursing School in New York City, after which she worked as an operating room nurse at Fitkin Hospital (now Jersey Shore Medical Center), and in the neurosurgery department of U. Penn Hospital in Philadelphia. She and Joe married in December 1956, and their first child arrived the following October. Five more would follow in short order, which interrupted her nursing career until she resumed it years later as the beloved nurse at St. Mary’s Grammar School in Deal, NJ. Ginny and Joe raised their family on the Jersey Shore, buying their first home in Neptune City, then moved on to Neptune, Interlaken, and in 1966 to Ocean Township where they raised their family. In 1985 they moved to Allenhurst and in 2005 moved back to Ocean Township where they remained. A devout Catholic, Ginny was an extremely prayerful woman and a daily communicant for most of her life. She had a litany of novenas she would say each morning for her six children (and their spouses), her 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren (with 1 more expected), as well as for anyone else who asked for her prayers. Joe would often joke that when his wife wasn’t cooking or cleaning, she was praying. Ginny also enjoyed golfing with friends at Deal Golf & Country Club (where she and Joe were members for over 40 years), and relaxing with her daughters at the family cabana on Allenhurst beach. But she came into the fullness of her joy at gatherings for holidays and special occasions when surrounded by the loving family she doted on. She is survived by Joseph, her husband of over 65 years, and their sons James (Linda), John (Kathy), Paul (fiancée, Adara), daughters Joanne Heavey (John), Patricia Struck (Joe), Elizabeth Paterno (Michael), and daughter-in-law Amy Marmora, together with their children and grandchildren. She is predeceased by her brother Richard Crandall but is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, William and Nora Crandall. On her husband’s side, she is survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dolores and Tony Caracappa. Ginny accepted her final prognosis with peaceful resignation, and after sad goodbyes to those she loved so dearly, took her leave of this world a content soul. She will be remembered always by her family and many others as a woman of remarkable dignity, kindness and grace. No Visiting hours, A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30AM on Monday October 10, 2022 at St. Mary’s Church, 46 Richmond Ave., Deal, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to Interfaith Neighbors, 810 Fourth Ave., Asbury Park NJ 07712 .
