After law school, he was awarded a Reginald Heber Smith Community Lawyer Fellowship. He was an Editor of The Rutgers Law Review. He began his career as a judicial law clerk to the Presiding Judge of the Appellate Division of the Superior Court and was a career criminal defense trial attorney.
Mr. Keil was a member of the New Jersey and District of Columbia Bar, Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and Monmouth Bar Association. He was a Trustee of the Monmouth Bar Association for twenty years and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Ocean-Monmouth Legal Services, Inc. and Chair of the Monmouth Legal Aid Society. Early in his career he was a volunteer writer for the ACLU Journal. He received an award from the Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court for his legal representation of indigents.
