Obituary for Maril McFaul

Maril (a/k/a Marilee) McFaul

Maril McFaul, 90 yrs. old, passed away peacefully on hospice care at Bayshore Healthcare Center in Holmdel, New Jersey on January 26, 2023. Maril was born in Chicago, Illinois, the descendant of founders of a Whiskey distillery business in Newport Kentucky and would often talk of the family business.

She is predeceased by her parents, Dorothy (nee Tocher) McFaul Schultz and Leroy McFaul, and a brother, James J. McFaul.

She is survived by her brother, Robert P. McFaul (Wendy) of Florida and his family, and many cousins, especially Rita Kortekamp (Jack) nee O’Shaugnessy, with whom she maintained a lasting friendship.

Maril grew up in Illinois and would later attend college at Marquette University. Right out of college and true to the fearless independent young woman she was becoming, Maril made a solo move to the east coast in the 1950’s, ultimately landing a job in New York City with the NY Post, from which she retired at age 62. She was a long-time resident of North Bergen and later of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, but also spent time living abroad in Russia on assignment for the NY Post. Maril had her 15 minutes of fame where she was quoted by the NY Times newspaper while on a Union picket line strike against the NY Post in Oct.1993. She loved to read and discuss books and articles, many on politics and current events, and she loved her cats. She also liked to send notes, including “ thank you notes” to her local police department. Maril did her own thing and said what was on her mind at all times. She was a force to be reckoned with and was quite the character.

Visiting will be from 10 am until her funeral service at 10:30 am Thursday at the Fiore Funeral Home, 882 Broadway, West Long Branch. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in West Long Branch. For condolences, please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com.
