Obituary for Lorraine B McCarthy

Lorraine McCarthy, 92, long time resident of Interlaken, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 with loved ones by her side.  She was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to Marie and Matthew Meehan on July 2, 1928.  Lorraine was a graduate of St. Nicholas Grammar School and St. Aloysius Academy, Jersey City, New Jersey and went on to attend Notre Dame College in New York.  She married the love of her life, James McCarthy of Bayonne, New Jersey, in June of 1950 and they eventually made their way to “The Jersey Shore.”   Lorraine was a devoted wife and loving mother who, in later years, became an actively involved and very energetic grandma.  Lorraine was a communicant of Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Park, New Jersey.  She loved entertaining on her front porch, planning excursions for the Interlaken Leisure Club, reading and going to dinner and a movie with friends.  She could often be seen taking walks around town with her dear friend Ruth or riding her bike to the beach.  In later years she and Jim caught the travel bug.  Their vacations brought them across the country and across the ocean.  Travel was her passion and she loved planning her trips almost as much as going on them.  Lorraine enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren.  They will have fond memories of their time together ice skating and canoeing on Deal Lake, cross-country skiing “grandma style,” golfing, Sunday morning breakfasts, homemade scones and family dinners.  Lorraine was poised, even tempered and easy to be with.  Although her final years presented her with health challenges, she accepted her situation with good nature and nary a complaint.  She was a role model for us all.   Lorraine is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Noreen Tarriff and her husband Michael as well as Deirdre Leonard and her husband Andrew.  She is also survived by her seven grandchildren; Justin and his wife Kim, Ryan and his wife Caitlyn, Matthew and his wife Ashley, Kevin, Mark, Kathleen and James along with her three great-grandchildren, Patrick, Brianne and Bodyn.  Lorraine was predeceased by her loving husband James in 1989 and her beloved son Brian in 2008 as well as her parents and her devoted brother John Meehan and his wife Elizabeth.  Lorraine lived her life with style and grace.  She was loved by all who knew her.  Her presence will be sadly missed, but her memory will be cherished and she will live forever in our hearts. Arrangements are being handled by Buckley Funeral Home in Asbury Park, New Jersey.  Lorraine will be celebrated during a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church in Deal, New Jersey.  Due to these extraordinary times, services and interment will be private. Donations may be made in Lorraine’s memory to Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, PO Box 476 Convent Road, Convent Station, NJ 07961-0476 or POAC (Parents of Autistic Children) at www.poac.net/
