Obituary for Lois Mae Landis

Lois Mae Tildesley Landis, 90, of Ocean Township, NJ passed away on February 16. Lois and her twin brother, born on November 1, 1931 in Neptune City, NJ, were the youngest of six children born to Arthur and Hazel Tildesley. After her father’s untimely death in 1942, Lois and her siblings were raised by their mother with loving support from family and friends, most notably Walter and Anna Pettit of Neptune City. The family moved to Asbury Park in the 1940s, where Lois graduated high school in 1949.

Lois loved to sing and dance. In a spring 1949 production of “Tourists” by the Asbury Park Women’s Club, she fell in love with her debonair dance partner, Robert “Bob” Landis, who had recently returned from the war in the Pacific. They were married one year later in June of 1950. She and Bob started their family in Neptune and moved to Ocean Township in 1962, where they raised five children together in the Shadow Lawn Manor neighborhood.

Lois was steadfast in her dedication to her family and the local community. She was fully engaged in her children’s lives through her work with the Parent-Teacher Association and as a Girl Scout leader. She was devoted to the First United Methodist Church of Oakhurst, where she served in countless ways over several decades through her participation in various committees and clubs, and as a Sunday School teacher, usher and coffee hour host. She also served on the 1949 Asbury Park High School Reunion Committee, and she spent time with many patients at Jersey Shore Medical Center as an accredited peer support volunteer of the Mended Hearts program.

She also dedicated much of her time and talents to the Township of Ocean Historical Museum, where she and her husband Bob enjoyed working with fellow members to create exhibits and orchestrate events and fundraisers since the start of the museum in 1984. As a member of the Museum’s quilting club, Lois took a hand in creating 32 of the annual, locally renowned “Raffle Quilts.” Throughout her life, Lois was a loyal and ardent volunteer, and she leaves an inspiring legacy through her innumerable contributions to the community.

Lois is predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Robert Wayne Landis, Sr.; her parents, Arthur and Hazel Camp Tildesley; twin brother the Reverend Arthur Tildesley; four sisters and their spouses, Jean and Lawrence (“Sam”) Moss, Gwendolyn (“Bobbie”) and Edgar (“Eddie”) King, Doris and Robert Regan, and previous husband Carter Ogden, and Ann and Robert Bonney; niece Pamela King, nephew Kenneth Ogden, great niece Jessica Ann Bonney-Reveley and great nephew Eric Andrus.

She is survived by her daughter Michele and husband Tim Haider of West Long Branch, daughter Robin and husband John Nacarlo of Oakhurst, son Robert, Jr. and wife Christine of Manahawkin, son Paul of Oakhurst, and daughter Jodi and husband Ehab Abousabe of Montgomery Township; ten grandchildren: Rick, Tara, Alicia, Mike, Nick, Nicole, Taylor, Trevor, Amy and Kasey; and six great grandchildren: Alexis, Alyssa, Aiden, Selena, Giovani and Antonio. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Joan Nugent of Point Pleasant, NJ, Joan Cordon of Santa Clarita, CA, and Catherine Landis of Marietta, GA; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Lois’s memory to the First United Methodist Church, 103 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, NJ 07755, or the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
