Obituary for Kevin Christopher Dolan

Kevin Christopher Dolan, age 75, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, NJ, surrounded by his loving wife of 53 years and their four children. He was born in Orange, NJ and resided in Interlaken, NJ with his wife.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Patricia (Patty) McKenna Dolan; their four children Patty Ann (Scott) Hart, Amy Dolan-Miele, Meghan (Craig) Laffman, Peter (Stephanie) Dolan; their eight grandchildren, Finley, Elisabeth, Emma, Keiran, Connor, Francis, Margaret, and Marie; their step-granddaughters Madelyn and Julia Perfit-Hart; and his only sibling and sister, Sharon Dolan Cox of Sea Girt, NJ. He is predeceased by his parents Marion and Joseph Dolan of Spring Lake, NJ.
Kevin grew up in Spring Lake, NJ. He began his Catholic education at St. Catharine’s School. He commanded a room and had a larger than life personality with a sense of humor that would make you laugh so hard your belly would hurt. His own belly laugh was unmistakable. He was disciplined, honest, and forthright. He loved animals and often spoke of wanting a farm. He was known for his storytelling. He often told stories of childhood memories on his rowboat with his dog Chips and his high school years at Christian Brothers Academy. His favorite stories were told about how he loved driving his 1956 Red Thunderbird Convertible, top down along Ocean Avenue at the Jersey Shore with his high school sweetheart and future wife, Patty McKenna (later known as Pat).
Kevin graduated from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN, after successfully completing a ROTC program and earning a Bachelor’s degree (BBA) in Business Administration and Management. Three years later he attended Temple University where he earned a Master’s degree (MBA) in Accounting and Finance.
Kevin had an extraordinary work ethic, often working two or more jobs at a time while buying, renting, and selling real estate on the side throughout his life. Kevin’s first job was selling newspapers on a corner in Asbury Park, NJ. As a teenager, he loved working as a caddie at the Spring Lake Golf and Country Club. He began his naval career after graduating college where he started as the Assistant Supply Officer on the USS L.Y. Spear (AS-36). He continued to serve his country with pride on multiple duties including on the USS Richard E. Byrd (DDG-23) where he was deployed to sea on multiple occasions, spent two tours at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, and had additional tours of duty throughout Norfolk, VA, Philadelphia, PA, and Washington DC, including working at the Pentagon and culminating into a 20 year Navy career. Commander Kevin C. Dolan retired from the Navy in February of 1990. During and after his service in the Navy, he also taught as an adjunct professor of Accounting and Finance at the University of Maryland for 22 years. After his military service, he became Director, Fiscal Management and Operations at Prince George's Community College for 11 years. Kevin decided to return to the New Jersey Shore in 2001 and worked for Allied Irish Bank for a short time before becoming the Chief Financial Officer of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Cabrini) in New York City. He worked there for 18 years, retiring in December of 2019 at the age of 70. Out of all of his jobs, he viewed his most important job to be a husband, father, and grandfather.
After his retirement, Kevin and Pat remained active with their various real estate investments, spending time with family and friends, and traveling to and from Florida. They enjoyed relaxing together at home in their matching recliners with their dog Louie, while reading books or his various business newspapers and watching the news or movies.
One of Kevin’s favorite things to do was to watch the Fighting Irish, Notre Dame football games, with his son, Peter. In the spirit of Notre Dame football, he lived his life to “play like a champion”.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at 10:00 AM at St. Catharine Church in Spring Lake, NJ. There will be a private burial at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Monmouth County SPCA, St. Jude Children’s Research Center, or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
