Kathleen M. Shapiro, 66, of Oakhurst, Ocean Township, died Friday, September 24, 2010 at St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Long Branch.



She was born in Newark and lived in Sea Girt before moving to Oakhurst 43 years ago.



Mrs. Shapiro was an adjunct professor of History and Immigration at Monmouth University for the past 3 years. She was of a few self taught certified shorthand court reporters in the State of New Jersey. Kathleen worked in the Monmouth County Court System, Burlington County Court System and for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She was also a former president of the State Shorthand Reporters Association.



She was a member of Phi Alpha Theta.



Kathleen enjoyed traveling and was very fond of her trips to Europe especially Italy. She was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting, spending time with her grandchildren and at the Outer Banks in North Carolina with her friends, Phil and Nancy Scheuer.



She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Irene Stampfle Monaghan.



Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Gerald; sons, Matthew and his wife, Lori Shapiro and Brian and his wife, Kim Shapiro; sister, Elizabeth and her husband, Leonard Pantaleo; in-laws, Roberta and Bertram Berkowitz; grandchildren, Tyler, Lilly, Scott and Jane; nieces and nephews, Merrill, Seth, Alicia and Alison; grandnephew, Myles; and her best and longtime friend, Nancy Scheurer.



Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 9:30 am until her funeral service at 11:30 am Monday at Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. Burial will follow at Monmouth Memorial Park, Neptune. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her name be made to the American Cancer Society.
