Obituary for Janet Carton Schroth

Janet Carton Schroth, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Interlaken, NJ, on August 24th, 2021, with her loving family by her side. Janet was born in Neptune to the late James D. Carton Jr. and Merial Cornelius Carton, and was a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore. She is predeceased by her devoted husband, Emil A. Schroth Jr., and her beloved son, Emil A. Schroth, III (“Em”).   Janet graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1949. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1953. After graduating, Janet returned to the Jersey Shore where she taught physical education in many Ocean Township elementary schools. Janet met her future husband at the Allenhurst Beach Club and the couple married in 1954.    Janet’s greatest joy came in caring for her family. Her life was devoted to her quadriplegic son, Em III, who was born with Cerebral Palsy. Her strength and unwavering dedication to Em throughout his life was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Janet and Emil founded the Schroth School of the Ladacin Network (formerly United Cerebral Palsy of Monmouth and Ocean County), providing a continuum of care to infants, children and adults with complex physical and developmental disabilities. Janet’s outgoing personality was on full display there, brightening the days of staff and students alike. In the summertime, she enjoyed hosting students for an annual pool party at her home. She will fondly be remembered as a selfless caregiver and courageous advocate for persons with disabilities.   Janet was a member of St. Michael’s Church, West End, and, along with her husband, enjoyed being part of the Jersey Shore Chapter of the Legatus Organization. She was a lifelong member of Deal Golf and Country Club and was proud to receive recognition for her 48 years of dedicated service to the Ariel Club.  Janet enjoyed golf and bowling. Her bowling prowess was recognized each year by her fellow “Deal Dolls,” as she received the “Top Bowler” Award. Her grandchildren fondly remember her Thanksgiving meals, which were the highlight of the holiday season. Janet’s favorite dessert was a good cookie and her favorites were always the ones made by her dear friend, Judy Seger. Her favorite day was a day spent at the beach. Janet could be found at the Takanassee Beach Club, basking in the sun alongside close friends and taking Em in the pool. Evening walks on the boardwalk, listening to live music and people watching were among her favorite things to do.    She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Janet “Missy” Hislop, and her husband, James Hislop, of Jupiter, Florida, and their children, Emily (Gordon), Ryan, and Allison. Janet loved her grandchildren dearly and was looking forward to becoming a great-grandmother in November. Her selfless example of service to others will continue to inspire the next generation.   Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, August 31st, 2021, at 10:30am at St. Michael’s Church, 800 Ocean Avenue, Long Branch.    In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Em Schroth III may be made to the Ladacin Network -  Schroth School, 1701 Kneeley Blvd, Ocean Township, NJ 07712. www.Ladacin.org KINDLY NOTE: Given the rise in Covid-19 cases, Janet’s family encourages all guests wear face masks.
