Obituary for James Skopas

James Skopas Interlaken James Skopas, 91 passed away peacefully on December 9, 2015 at his home in Interlaken. Born in Long Branch, James lived in Asbury Park and was a graduate of Asbury Park High School and a member of the varsity football team. He moved to Interlaken in 1960. He was a B24 pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII, stationed in Italy. James flew 26 missions and retired as a Captain. He was a graduate of Syracuse University and received his BA in economics and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. James owned and operated Skopas’ Avon Pavilion for 20 years. He then opened the Bonanza Restaurant in Toms River in 1972 and then in Bricktown in 1978 and retired in 1992. James was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and was a free and accepted Mason. He was an avid skier, fisherman and runner. James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. James is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Pappas Skopas; his son, Rand S. Skopas and his wife, Nancy of Toms River; his grandchildren: Rand Alexander Skopas and James Richard Skopas and James’ wife, Brigid and his great-granddaughter, Elayna. Visitation will be on Sunday, December 13 from 3 pm – 7 pm in Buckley Funeral Home, 509 Second Avenue, Asbury Park. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 11 am in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 West Park Avenue, Ocean Township. Interment will follow in St. George Greek Orthodox Cemetery, W.
