Obituary for Betty K. Bostic

Betty K. Bostic Ocean Grove Betty K. Bostic, age 94, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2016, in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Born Betty Kathryn Apple in Piqua, Ohio, she married Jerry Bostic of Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1942. In the early 1950s, they moved to the East Coast where he pursued a career as a trainer and driver for Standardbred racehorses. Betty's career also was grounded in the sport of harness racing. She worked as a bookkeeper for New Jersey horseman Vernon Dancer until moving to New York to work for Roosevelt Raceway from 1966 to 1972. In 1972, she took a position with the State of New Jersey Racing Commission as an inspector and issuing licenses at Freehold Raceway. She retired in 1989. Betty was well known among the horsemen and visitors for the tin of candy she kept on the office counter and her friendly smile and warm greeting. Betty's family was blessed to have her as an example of caring and service. She was an active volunteer lending a hand to many racing related organizations, including serving as Sunshine Committee Chairman for the Speedy Fillies of New Jersey for more than fifteen years and was a long-term member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She also served as a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and school volunteer. Betty was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Lakewood, New Jersey, for forty years. Betty will always be remembered for her gift of sending cards and letters. In retirement, Betty devoted even more time to her avocation and sent as many as one hundred cards each month for birthdays and special occasions to friends and family as well as encouraging notes to college students and service men and women. She sent more than 650 Christmas cards each year. She was a fixture in her local post office and delighted in receiving cards and letters in the mail. Predeceased by her husband Jerry, her daughter Carolyn Thayer, and her brother Harold Apple, Betty is survived by her sister Jane Blauvelt of Port Richey, Florida, and her children Robert (Jean) Bostic of West Melbourne, FL, Nancy (Bill) Duke of Howell, NJ, and David (Teresa Koch-Bostic) Bostic of Mineola, NY, and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Betty will be held in the chapel at Francis Asbury Manor, 70 Stockton Avenue, Ocean Grove, NJ. The Celebration of Life service begins at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2016. This date would have been Betty's 95th birthday.
