Obituary for John J. Murphy

John (Jack) J. Murphy of Oakhurst passed away Thursday, Jan 21, 2016 at the age of 95. Born May 23, 1920, he grew up in Rumson, attended Rumson High School, graduated from Lafayette College and received his MBA from Monmouth University. He was a Navy veteran of WWII. John was a research scientist and served as chief of the electrochemical research branch of the Power Sources Division at Fort Monmouth. John was young at heart, had a great sense of humor, and a memory one could not believe.
He was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Helen (Merkel) Murphy, and siblings Marie E. Murphy, Daniel J. Murphy, Veronica A. Goodnough and Arthur F. Murphy.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Helen (Heleotis) Murphy. Helen was the true love of John’s life and they shared an amazing love and life together. He is also survived by nieces Coralee Johnson and husband James and their two children and two grandchildren; Pamela Waybright and husband Dave and their two children and two grandchildren; and Ronnie Coviello and husband Danny. Also surviving are twelve nieces and nephews from his wife’s family and his wonderful caregiver Pat MacKenn.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 5 to 9 pm Tuesday, January 26 at the Fiore Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 am Wednesday, January 27 at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 800 Ocean Avenue, Long Branch. Interment will follow at St. George Greek Orthodox Cemetery, 2342 West Bangs Avenue, Neptune. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Michael’s St. Vincent de Paul Society, Long Branch or St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Ocean Township.
